about

An mbira tutorial for mbira players. Three of William's tunes and arrangements are presented here with full notation and accompanying tracks for each part, variation and transition. Each tune has Kushaura, Kutsinhira and Bass parts fully outlined in relation to the hosho and helpful transitions are also included as well as possible variations within the parts. The tracks above are a sample of the 27 that will be available on purchase. They were recorded using a Nyamaropa tuned mbira in Bb (Devon tuning for the UK folks).

The tunes are as follows:

Nyamatekaire - a tune of William's based around the Taireva structure comprising Kushaura, Kutsinhira and Bass parts with variations.

Small Nyamaropa - another tune of William's related to the Chandrasarira structure and also comprising Kushaura, Kutsinhira, Bass parts and variations.

Mbavaira - William's version of this well known mbira tune consists of Kutsihira and Kushaura parts with high line variations along with a very funky bass part.

Some of the sound files are available to listen without purchase so you can get an idea of what to expect but all 27 will be available on purchase. The pdf of the 55 page booklet with descriptions, notation and helpful playing tips also becomes available to download once the purchase is complete.

Nyamasvisva, hailing from Mhondoro, also has a huge repertoire, but also an extraordinary ability to improvise at speed and an ability to make the music swing while remaining true to its traditional roots.
